We had out-grown our old steamer and were looking for a larger one for our family. This more than exceeded my expectations. It is large. A single level is almost as big as the old steamer. I thought I would have to use all three to exceed my previous capacity. Another plus is the shape. The circular design of some steamers is limiting. Putting in fillets or things like asparagus is easier to arrange now. I think the asparagus actually turns out better since it's in the center of the dish and not around the edges conforming to the shape of a circular container. Also, the oblong shape allows more efficient use of space to arrange items like fillets, thus more fits. There is also more surface area on the bottom. While the volume of some steamers may be large, a lot of this volume is consumed vertically. The design of this tray has more surface area along the bottom and is not as deep compared to other steamer trays boasting the same capacity.br /br /Steamed foods turn out fine in the automatic modes as well as manual. I find myself sticking mainly to manual, since there are lots of variables the preset programs can't account for like personal preference on 'doneness', quantity - which can affect circulation, type of food which a handful of presets cannot possibly prepare to everyone's personal preference, etc.br /br /PROS: Lots of steam- fast. Easy to read display. Easy to use functions. Nice to have a water refill port that can be accessed while in use as well as easy to clean after use. Nesting feature of the trays is a great space-saver.br /br /CONS: One major drawback, the manual setting cannot be used with a delay. The presets are cute, but unnecessary. Event the manual itself recommends varying times from the recommended preset times to conform to your preferences. I'd trade all of those presets to be able to use the delay feature with button eight - the manual mode. Did it take extra effort to not allow a delay feature with one out of the eight modes? Seriously.br /br /Great product with one key item for improvement. If you want more capacity than your typical steamer, this has it and is up to the task of steaming all those levels.

Have never written a review on Amazon but use them regularly...br /br /Used a manual Oster Steamer for years but the wife wanted a new "digital one"...Seemed to be a nice steamer at first....stopped working after 5 days...Bought an Oster Digital Steamer from Target...hope it does well or we will be back to the old "manual timer" steamer...

I have always wanted a digital rice cooker and when my conventional Gaunaurd rice cooker died, the hunt for one was on. I didn't want to spend too much on one (i.e. Zojirushi). My criteria were simple, I wanted one with more than just a "cook" and "warm" setting. I wanted to be able to turn it off. It had to be digital but not necessarily programmable. My husband and I were also looking at the Krups FDH 212 before I saw this rice cooker. The only difference I notice between the two so far are: Krups has 3 setting, Oster has 5; Krups allows delay cooking by 9 hours, Oster by 8 (why Oster didn't do 9, have no idea... wasn't like it was an extra digit); and the power cord on the Oster is detachable, the one on the Krups is permanently attached to the unit.br /br /I was a little hesitant to buy a rice cooker made by Oster because I read some reviews on their other rice cookers where people were complaining about burnt rice. I made rice in it the day I got the cooker and the rice came out perfect, no burnt rice! I have not used the steamer basket yet so can't say too much about it. The lid stays cool. The sides get a tad warm from the heat but it is not hot enough to burn your hand.br /br /Some things to consider but they do not really bother me: the power cord is a little on the short side but it is fine if you have the rice cooker right by the power outlet (or you can use an extension cord). I like the short cord since my other rice cooker had a long cord and the thing was just piled up behind the rice cooker. The owner's manual is a little skimpy. If you want/need some recipe suggestions, you won't find them here. Krups includes recipes in their owner's manual which is actually a book, not a fold out thing.br /br /All in all, I think this is a good buy and a nice unit for the price (difference of approx between the two models I was looking at).

One of the best values out there. I've been using it (bought elsewhere) for about a year and a half, and have made all sorts of grains, soups, steam buns, poached fish, cupcakes...really, you name it, I've tried cooking it. That said:br /br /-The white rice and brown rice buttons, so far as I can tell, mainly affect how quickly the heating element works, and I've been happy with their performance. Because brown rice still has the bran and germ in it, it cooks slower, and if it were heated as quickly as white rice you'd end up with half-cooked centers surrounded by mush. Trust me that this is less appetizing than it sounds. If you're working with some other grain than rice, judge by its size and texture which setting will be more appropriate: oatmeal or quinoa, for instance, do much better at the white rice setting, while barley and wild rice require the brown. Don't even get me started on beans.br /br /-The delay timer only works in 1-hour increments, and it's a delay to when cooking begins, not when it's done. Plan accordingly. br /br /-The condensation collector is excellent, but the particle trap beneath the steam vent is not. As other reviewers have said, you do need to clean it by hand, and there's no easy way to get to all the little nooks and crannies in the sealing ring. The problem mostly comes from grains with a lot of loose starch, and can be reduced by rinsing them in cold water before cooking. If you see strange bubbles coming out of the lid, you didn't rinse long enough.br /br /-The steamer tray works well, though there isn't much vertical clearance. If you want to steam large amounts of food I'd suggest getting a few insertable ones to stack in the main pot. br /br /Really, if you're looking for a convenient multi-purpose cooker that can handle food in portions for 2-10 people, this is excellent. You're not going to find the same functionality for a comparable price.

Cooked rice never comes out right - AC - Ventura County, CA, United States
I've owned Aroma rice cookers before (different sizes, all with the glass lid) and they were worked out fine. For everyday use, I have a small Tiger rice cooker which is still working great after several years of daily use. br /br /I bought the Aroma ARC-960SB from Costco because I wanted a bigger rice cooker with the hinged lid for occasional parties at my house. My other 10-cup Aroma rice cooker has the glass lid and after a few hours, the rice tends to dry out in the Keep Warm mode, and if I unplug it, the rice cools down pretty fast... not nice for the late guests. br /br /Whenever I use the Aroma ARC-960SB the rice never comes out right. My white rice is always mushy. Recently, we started eating brown rice, and I tried this since it has a brown rice feature. The cooked brown rice at the top was fine, but the rice at the bottom was overcooked, hard, and dry. Now in some cultures, they purposely overcook the bottom of the rice, but that is not what I was aiming for. In contrast, the first time I made brown rice on my small Tiger rice cooker, the result, while not perfect, was acceptable (consistent texture top to bottom).br /br /Now I know that I can experiment and tweak my rice/water ratio. But for me, rice cookers should be no-brainers. I don't want to waste my time and food performing tweaking experiments because the equipment is unforgiving in its recipe requirement. I cooked perfect rice when I first tried my other rice cookers, why does this one have to be different?

burned bottom every time - Cynthia Erickson - California
The most important question when assessing a rice cooker is "Does it do a good job cooking the rice?" Any comments about the other features are moot if the rice turns out poorly. I have had this rice cooker for nearly two years and have never had much luck cooking good rice. There is always a burned film on the bottom of the pan that I have to throw out. Furthermore, the rice is usually dry when it is finished. I have tried washing the rice beforehand, more water, less water, using the warming function, not using the warming function and it is consistently burned. Cleaning the lid is a bit of a hassle, but I wouldn't mind if the rice turned out OK. The steaming option works well, but I can just as easily steam vegetables on the stove-top with easier clean up. My previous rice cooker was a simple one-button cooker that always cooked the rice just right. This rice cooker seemed like a good deal, but now I wish I had saved my money.

Our first rice cooker (as far as I know) this turned out to be the right product for our needs. It is small in footprint and simple in operation, but it makes great rice in the style of oriental restaurants. Be aware that it does not come with a steaming rack (maybe too small to be useful?) and you can not purchase (at this time anyway) another basket separately if you damage the one that comes with the cooker. The price is right and the product performs exactly as promised.

I was curious to see whether this would really be a convenience or if I was just wasting money on a "gimmick." But I love this dispenser, and it really does make it easier and less messy than storing rice in the bag or in a tupperware type container. Another reviewer complained that it does not dispense a proper cup measure, but the measure is actually set for one Japanese cup of rice. It is slightly smaller than an English/American cup, but the measure is in fact, perfectly suited for a rice maker. So, it is convenient for me because I can just depress the button a couple of times to dispense an appropriate measure of rice, dump it into my rice maker, add water to the appropriate fill line on the rice maker, and not really have to measure anything. It comes out right each time.

Performs Roughly as advertised - Pong Man - The OC, CA USA
My main intention for this purchase was a result of an infestation of weevils in my existing rice container (steel trash can) even though I've used it for over 10 years without any issues. I wanted a more bugproof enclosure for storing rice.br /br /The product performed poorly. The top lid feels cheap and does not close airtight. There are no seals or latches, it simply rests on top. My IKEA candy jar has a better seal. The 150g dispenser is not accurate. It can be off by as much as 1/3 a cup and depends on how long I hold the button down. Very disappointing.br /br /The photo here is inaccurate as it is a Very off white colored, reminscent of 80's style appliances and reminds me of white products that have yellowed from time and sun exposure. The dispensing button is loose and rattles in place. The receiver cup sticks to rice even after being washed and dried.br /br /It will do as advertised, hold (I dumped a full 25 lb bag in) and dispense rice but unless you have a "rice bug" problem, there's no reason to trouble yourself with this inaccurate, rather clumsy dispenser or any dispenser when any plastic container will do.br /br /Should you decide to try it out anyway and get that email from Air Water about a survey for off your next order, you'll find out after you fill it out that it only applies to 0+ purchase.

I have owned this rice cooker for a few years now, and haven't had a single complaint. It makes perfect rice every time. I don't think I've ever been able to make rice on the stove as tasty as the rice made by this cooker.br /My only comments are that the click of the cooker going from "cook" to "keep warm" is pretty quiet, but I've trained my ear for it and rarely miss it when I'm in the general area of the cooker. Also, the 10 cup cooker is HUGE! I've never made over 5 cups of rice in it, and I would definitely have gone for the smaller model if I'd known how huge it would be.

Best Rice Cooker - Mom of Three - US
As a Pacific Islander I have been greatly influenced by Asian cultures and rice is a main staple in my diet. It is impotant feature for islanders that rice cookers keep the rice fresh and unspoiled after it is done cooking it. This rice cooker does a great job doing just that.

I just got this cooker today, so durability is not something I can rate yet.br /br /These are the things I like;br /br /1. No plastic. This was important for me. Both the bottom rice cooker and the steamer tray are metal. The lid is glass.br /br /2. Nice and compact. I cook for my wife and myself, so I don't something huge, and of course storage space is always limited. The steamer tray is small; on the other hand, the manual claims that this can cook up to 5 cups of rice.br /br /3. Easy cleanup. Yes some of the rice made a gooey mess in the bottom, but a little soaking took it all right out.br /br /4. Inexpensive.br /br /5. Multi-purpose. I have used it once so far, and here's what I did. I put some brown rice in the bottom rice cooker, and some salmon, broccoli and cauliflower in the steamer tray. The manual says nothing about steaming anything other than veggies, but I thought I'd try it. The result: Excellent. The salmon was cooked to perfection, and so were the vegetables. So I had a complete, tasty, and healthy meal, all in one cooker, and so long as I was prepared to let the bowl and the tray soak for a bit, cleanup was a breeze. Oh and you can make soups, stews, etc. instead of cooking rice. It's not a large-capacity cooker but it would make plenty of stew for two people.br /br /Things I don't like:br /br /1. No timer. It apparently senses when the steam is gone, and then switches to "warmer" mode automatically. The only control is a switch that goes from "cook" to "warmer." This also means that you have to unplug it to turn it off, though that doesn't bother me.br /br /That's about the only thing I have to carp about so far. It didn't bubble or spit at all.br /br /If I can get at least three or four years of regular (and by regular I mean nearly daily) use out of this thing, I'll consider it an extremely good value.

I asked for a rice cooker over the holidays.br /Received this Oster and was happy to have one :Dbr /Every time I cook rice in it, even when stirring it after the fifteen minutesbr /rice is browned and stuck to the bottom. Rice about it is slightly edible; br /definitely more "al dente" than I'd prefer. br /Right now I am using it for the fourth time and smell a heavy burning electrical odor. br /I will go back to using a small covered 1 1/2 quart nonstick sauce pan!

My parents have this Aroma rice cooker, whereas I have a cheaper Black and Decker at my own apartment. So I have experience with rice cookers and I must say that this Aroma one is pretty good.br /br /For one thing, I like the locking lid, as opposed to a removable glass lid (like on my Black and Decker) with a hole in it. This means less clean-up. However, it also means that the cooking vessel can't serve as its own pot that you could just put directly into the fridge with leftovers; cheaper rice cookers with glass lids effectively increase you storage capacity, in a way. But it's a minor quibble.br /br /Best of all, this Aroma unit consistently makes good rice without ever burning the bottom or producing a sticky starchy layer at the bottom. My Black and Decker, as good as it is, ALWAYS produces a slightly toasted starchy layer at the bottom.br /br /The unit is not super-fast, but not slow either. I purchased an Aroma rice cooker and after I used it twice the lid would not seal. br /I contacted the company and they never even bothered to reply. Lousy product, lousy customer service. Wasted money and time. I will never buy another Aroma product.
